Gusher Knob - Ultra-High Purity Quartz Deposit
Spruce Pine Mining District, North Carolina
Gusher Knob, a 224-acre land tract and mineral resource located in the Spruce Pine Mining District in North Carolina's Avery County. A large portion of this property (c. 60 acres) contains a kaolin-based deposit of low-alumina (Al at 8 ppm) high purity quartz (also known as ultra-high purity quartz). The property and deposit is owned & managed by the Land and Mineral Company. Its quartz resource, suitable for use in the semiconductor, fiber optic, and solar industries, is available for purchase or long-term investment. This website presents information on specifications and volumes of the quartz, as determined by contract drilling, sampling, and testing.
The property's Avery County tax parcel ID is 181200263543 (Avery County Recorder of Deeds). The Gusher Knob property and high purity quartz deposit is off Hwy. 194, one mile east of Hwy. 19E, just 5 miles east of Spruce Pine, NC. The Spruce Pine Mining District is home of one of the richest deposits of minerals and gems in the world, known for the abundance of accessible mica, kaolin, feldspar, and quartz deposits in the region. The Land and Mineral Company
The Land and Mineral Company was founded in 1928 to hold the real estate and mineral resource assets of the Brown family of Asheville, North Carolina. It is chartered in Delaware and has conducted business in mineral rights and land transactions in Avery and Mitchell Counties since its founding.
Its primary mineral resource asset is Gusher Knob, a 224-acre tract located in Avery County on Hwy 194, approximately one mile east of Hwy 19E, and five miles east of Spruce Pine. Approximately eighty acres of the property have a kaolin-based deposit of very high purity quartz and ultra-high purity quartz.
Our Ultra-High Purity Quartz Deposit
In 1997, 37 cores were drilled by Lewis J. Hash and Associates, Inc., Mineral Consultants. Five samples from each of five holes were beneficiated and tested, with average results as outlined below. Beneficiation was performed by the Minerals Research Laboratory of Asheville, N.C.
The exhibit also shows specs from other major high purity quartz producers for comparison. (Details for each of these 25 samples are available here.)
About Spruce Pine Quartz
Unique geological conditions in the Spruce Pine Mining District in North Carolina have created the world's highest quality quartz deposits, known as ultra-high purity quartz.
Per the 1997 Lewis J. Hash report, Gusher Knob has 1.2 million tons of ore with a c. 10.6% recovery rate, resulting in an estimated c. 100,000 tons of quartz. The full Hash Report is provided in the APPENDIX, as well as USGS Bulletin #48, dated 1946, re kaolin deposits in the area, with specific information on the Gusher Knob deposit.
